In its earliest days, radio had an almost magical quality, with its ability to draw voices seemingly out of thin air into small black boxes. As its name suggests, this exhibit looks at the history of radio in Nelson, with a focus on the earlier years of broadcasting when the medium was at its most popular. Selected artifacts from the Touchstones Nelson permanent collection will be featured, as well as amateur, or “ham” radio, (which continues to be a viable communication option for backcountry enthusiasts and others in our region), and a timeline of selected radio highlights from the early 20th century up to the present day.

Sunshine Drive announces its debut CD “Borrowed Time”. The band is hosting a CD release party Saturday, February 4, 2012 at The Royal On Baker in Nelson, where they will play songs from the album, and fans can purchase CDs.
Sunshine Drive's repertoire spans R&B, blues, rock, reggae, ska, and all CD tracks are original compositions by band members. Bassist Phil Wilson-Birks says, “We think people will love the quality, variety and 'danceability' of these tunes.”
The title track “Borrowed Time” has already been released to Canadian radio stations. “Sunshine Drive covers an amazing musical range, and this CD really rocks“, says Susan Hastings, who hosts “In The Key of BC” at Kootenay Public Radio.

Nelson’s Old-time Dance and Social Club presents a Midwinter Hoedown at 7 PM on Thursday, February 9 at the Scout Hall, 310 Cedar St.

Through photography, sculpture, painting and installation, the artists reveal the tensions and connections between society and the natural world. Artists Ian Johnston, Tanya Pixie Johnson, Barbara Maye and Nadine Stefan present diverse approaches, with references to science, history, spirituality and First Nations culture. By reflecting on our relationship with the natural world, perhaps we can come to a deeper understanding of our own place within it.

The Australian music award winner, radio DJ and one man blues singer/songwriter/guitar extraordinaire from the land down under is on a Canadian tour and will be bringing his popular roots and blues sound to the Royal to support his latest album, "Hot Mama Vibes". Grunwald is a real treat, a soulful performer with a deep love of the blues...and he's coming an awfully long way...make sure you see this show!
