“Ring the bells that you can ring, forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything–that’s how the light gets in.”
Leonard Cohen

Date: Sat. Oct 16 - - Sun. Oct. 17

Location: ManiStone Centre, Nelson

Tuition: $110-$150

Phone: (250) 352-7908

The Alchemy of Writing is a practice, a way of being. You discover this way of being when you are present, open, and willing to receive what emerges from the unknown depths of your being. This is not like school, where you get good marks for being right. This is a way of diving into the wildness, the unpredictability of life itself, and discovering resources, capacities that want to make themselves known to you.

These resources might express themselves in the form of grief, of longing, of unexpected delight—who knows? To be whole means connecting with essence, with your core, this being that rejects nothing, and embraces every part of who you are. We might have ideas about the power of acceptance, of the full embrace– in this writing, we feel what that actually is. We let go of our need to know, to control, to achieve specfic outcomes. We meet ourselves, without defenses, and we discover that we are not who we think we are.

“I am vast, I contain multitudes,” sang Walt Whitman. You are no different than Walt. You are also a being of infinite dimensions. Writing is a river; it carries us into places we have never been, places we have never imagined, far beyond the limits of our little conditioned mind.

This workshop will give you every opportunity to rest in the freedom, in the power, in the compassionate warmth of presence, and to express yourself fully in this openness. When you express, when you find the courage to allow your authentic being to emerge, you become more and more fully yourself. And as yourself, you are a gift to this world.

This is the good news. We don’t have to run around searching for good things to do. We just have to learn how to be fully and freely expressed. Then our natural goodness shines. We find the courage to take risks, to be transparent, to love more, even when it’s not safe. To be fully alive, vulnerable, tender, juicy. Not needing to prove anything. Just here as we are.

Sessions will include sitting, inquiry, gentle energy work, and dialogue. Sometimes alone, sometimes with a partner, sometimes in small groups.

Tuition is a sliding scale: $110-$150. Pre-registration required.
Workshop times:

Sat. Oct. 15 1:00-5pm
Sun. Oct. 16 10-5:30pm

For more information, or to register, visit http://www.barefootjourneys.net

Shayla is a coach, teacher, mentor and writer. She supports those who are ready to awaken to the intimacy, power and natural creativity of presence.

A New Birth: Love or Fear by Cherionna Menzam

When we study the neural pathways of the brain, we see that we are hard-wired for fear. We are designed to be able to react quickly to threat. We are on the look-out for danger, and immediately become more alert and ready to fight or fly when it presents.

Our perception of fear, however, is not hard-wired. It is programmed by our experience. That programming begins before we even exit the womb at birth, and tends to determine how we respond to challenges in life.

Fortunately, we are also designed for love. When we have had a difficult beginning, or extreme challenges in life, we may need to work harder to bypass established patterns of fear and access the love.

Prenatal Learning
As little ones in the womb, we prepare for the world we are to be born into. As with all of our survival needs prenatally, our perception of threat before birth depends on mother. Our growth and development vary according to how mother perceives her environment. If she feels threatened, baby develops a body and nervous system prepared for danger. When mom feels safe and nurtured, baby prepares to live in a safe, nurturing world.

As Bruce Lipton points out in his book, The Biology of Belief, “The responsiveness of individuals to the environmental conditions perceived by their mothers before birth allows them to optimize their genetic and physiologic development as they adapt to the environmental forecast” (p. 157). The rising field of epigenetics explores how genes are turned on and off in this way.

The Gateway of Birth
For many of us, our prenatal programming is reinforced by how we are born. Birth is designed to give the nervous system a jump start as the head squeezes through the birth canal and then expands with our first breaths. Ideally, we experience an ignition to our whole system, with each organ enjoying the massage of our passage out of the womb. We then emerge into the loving arms of mom, supported by her nurturing partner and community. Our bonding with mom is fostered by oxytocin, the “love hormone” naturally released during childbirth.

Modern, western birth is rarely this gentle and welcoming. Many of us were pulled out of the birth canal with rough tools or hands. Birth attendants are usually relative strangers, even if their hands are gentle. Babies are often taken from mom - home and lifeline for the last nine or so months - to be weighed, cleaned and measured. Many are rushed away from mom to another room by strangers in an atmosphere of fear and crisis.

Our first breaths are accompanied by this imprint of how we are received at birth. Our first sight with our new eyes is often the blinding lights of an operating room or neonatal intensive care unit. Our nervous system reacts to this extreme stress. When our cries do not bring us back to the soothing familiarity of mom, and we are too small to fight or fly, we withdraw into shocked silence. Oxytocin is hard to access in this state.

Mom, in the meantime, begins her own physiological withdrawal when separated from her baby. Her body reacts as if her baby were dead, and bonding and breast feeding can be impeded.

While we may appear to recover from this startling beginning, these early experiences leave deep, lasting impressions on our rapidly learning nervous system. We may find ourselves later in life easily overwhelmed by change and challenged by relationships. New beginnings are quickly, unconsciously associated with our birth. We forget that we are now grown, highly capable individuals. We regress into our infantile experience, feeling helpless, alone, unheard, unseen, unloved.

Return to Love
The good news is that love is our essence. We can return to it at anytime.

I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with newborns and small children, as well as adults who harbor an inner little one. I have witnessed first hand how the nervous system and the psyche can shift back to an orientation to something deeper and more essential than one’s trauma history.

When we live in the shadow of an early imprint, we are not really here in present time. Some aspect of us is always interpreting our experience according to that first experience. A major key to returning to love is to bring our attention to the present.

Babies Tell their Story
Babies are not able on their own to differentiate between what they are remembering and what is happening now. They experience everything as now. They readily respond, however, if we differentiate for them.

When I work with babies, they often begin to “tell the story” of their birth, as soon as they sense that I understand this territory. They may begin to push or turn as they did in their birth. It can be helpful for babies, as it is for any of us, to be able to express to others an intense experience they have had. If the feelings associated with that event are too extreme, however, little ones can become overwhelmed by their memory. Babies easily get lost in this past pain. It can be remarkably helpful to make a simple statement differentiating then from now. I might say something like, “Yes, that’s what it was like then. I’m sorry you had to go through that. And you got through it. You are here now. Here’s mom now.”

It can be surprising how quickly babies will settle with this information. And, yes, babies do understand what we say to them. They may not know all the words, although evidence of their comprehension is amassing. They certainly understand, however, our intentions and respond to our words.

Little Ones Within
All of us have within us the influence of our own prenatal and birth experience. In that our modern western culture does not endorse this kind of memory, we are not supported as toddlers in talking about these experiences, which would bring them into more conscious, explicit memory. We are nonetheless under their influence.

We are all capable of regressing into an infantile state, where we lose access to our more grown up resourcefulness. If we have had a difficult birth or prenatal experience, we will tend to slip into this early state when encountering major change or transition. Like the babies we once were, we may be unable to differentiate in this state between then and now. We may then find ourselves unable to cope, depressed, withdrawn, or incapacitated by primal rage or terror. It is helpful to have support at these times from someone who understands the trauma states little ones can experience. There are also ways to support yourself in these situations.

Present Time, Love Present
Just as I help my little clients to differentiate between then and now, it can be helpful to remind yourself that these feelings are from the past, when you were too little to protect yourself. Let yourself remember how old you are now. Remind yourself of all the skills you have developed that you didn’t have back then. For example, you can read. You can walk and talk. You can earn and count money and pay for things. Perhaps you can drive, hold down a job, dial the phone. Make a list of these simple skills that you have that you didn’t have when you were little. This can help you to remember who you are now.

Make yourself look around the room you are in. Take note of the colors, shapes, images you see. Name what you see. This brings you into present time. Similarly, attending to and identifying sensations you feel supports you in being present. Take note of simple sensations like heat in your foot, the sensation of the your body resting in the chair. Make tiny movements with one hand or finger or other body part, and let yourself be with the felt sense of that momement.

Challenge yourself to see how you are safe in this moment. Our fear is never actually about the present. It is about what could happen in the future, and is based on the past. Even if you are in a burning building, your fear is not about this moment. You are relatively ok in this moment. Your fear is that you will never escape… that it will get worse…that you will be burned, or more burned, or lose your things and loved ones, or lose more of them than you have already lost. In this moment, you can always find some sense of safety, something that tells you that you are safe.

As you come into present time, you will begin to find love. You can support this process by thinking of what you feel grateful for or appreciate. Gratitude and appreciate actually shift your physiology. There is always something to feel grateful for, even if it is just the breath you just took.

Breath is Life
By the way, are you breathing? When we are in fear, our breath tends to become shallow and fast, as the sympathetic nervous system prepares us for fight or flight. If you are not in actual physical danger, where you need to be able to run away or protect yourself, it can be helpful to sit or lie down and put a hand on your belly. Let yourself become aware of the movement of the breath in your belly. You will feel your hand rising and falling with the breath. This awareness supports your parasympathetic nervous system, which is involved with rest and rejuvenation.

As you settle, love becomes more accessible. You can begin to think about what you actually desire in relation to the situation at hand. You can begin to appreciate what you have and build on that. You may even choose to share your love with your inner little one. Imagine him or her and ask yourself what that little one most needs. Chances are, it is to be held and loved. This is something you can provide, even if you didn’t receive it back then. Go ahead and visualize yourself holding this little one in your arms, in your heart. It is never too late to love and be loved.

Meeting a new beginning or change from a state of love may in itself be a new beginning for you. You may find yourself going through a different kind of birth in this moment. Welcome to your new life!

The Feldenkrais Method® teaches us how to sense ourselves, our minds and our bodies. It is through this sensory perception that we can begin to tap into the tremendous human capacity for growth and self-healing. Improvements range from simply feeling more natural, grounded and at home in your body to improvements in balance, flexibility and coordination, a greater sense of well being and self-connection, an increase in range of motion and improvements in memory.

The Feldenkrais Method® can be of benefit to all ages and physical abilities; those experiencing chronic or acute pain of the back, neck, shoulders, hips, legs, or knees, as well as healthy individuals who wish to enhance their movement abilities. The Method has been very helpful in dealing with central nervous system conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and stroke. Musicians, actors, and artists can extend their abilities and enhance their creativity. Seniors enjoy using it to retain or regain their ability to move without strain or discomfort.Over the years we accumulate countless habits many of which are necessary for daily functioning and survival. However if we never find a way to “mix it up a little”, some of these habits become significantly limiting, even debilitating. On a neuro-muscular level, in other words in our muscles, brains and bones, we need to discover and experience new patterns and alternatives. As human beings we thrive on this learning, it’s invigorating and revitalizing. Many lessons are based on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities taken out of context like reaching, standing, moving from lying to sitting and looking behind yourself. Some are based on more abstract explorations of joint, muscle, and postural relationships. Because these movements are explored out of context the brain does not recognize them in the same way, thus avoiding the well worn tracks of our habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities, creating an opportunity for learning and improvement.Often people will have pain in one area, for example in the neck, thinking there is something wrong with that area. After doing a lesson that awakens the movement possibilities in their rib cage and middle back, areas where many have “forgotten” to move, they may find that their “neck problem” has miraculously disappeared. The body is like a mechanical system, overuse of one part leads to breakdown in another, when all our parts are movable and able to contribute, the whole functions much better. We are designed for the brunt of the heavy work we do to be carried by the larger and stronger muscles of the body that are closer to the core, the neck and limbs are then available for finer motor controls. We also need a movable skeleton to support and make room for this organization. In our “neck problem” example the muscles of the neck no longer bear the burden of the work of turning, a maliable rib cage and middle back is now allowing the larger muscles of the back to do their part!

Group classes, called Awareness Through Movement lessons® (ATMs), are non-achievement oriented, emphasizing awareness, effortlessness and pleasure as you explore interesting sequences of movement. This approach allows the student to learn to sense themselves in a safe and quiet environment where connections and clarifications can be made, gaining insight into their learning and movement habits and opening new doors. Strategies for change then become more available as our actions, and often our thoughts and feelings as well, become freer, lighter and more efficient.

Private Feldenkrais® lessons, called Functional Integration lessons® (FIs), are tailored to each student’s individual learning needs. The teacher guides your movements through gentle non-invasive touching and words. The student is fully clothed, lying on a table, or in a sitting or standing position. At times, various props (pillows, rollers, blankets) are used in an effort to support the student, or to facilitate certain movements.

“Tell me what you plan to do with your one wild and precious life.” (Mary Oliver)

We live in a vast field of creative energy that wants to move through us. Opening to this energy allows us to access our natural creativity, freedom and courage. In this workshop, we will be learning how to relate to this process of writing as powerful medicine. This medicine has nothing to do with special talents or skills. It is available to all of us. This medicine connects us with the natural wholeness of our being, and allows us to access our deepest resources.

Spring is a time of awakening, dynamism and new growth. We will be focusing in this work with ourselves and each other on opening new possibilities for movement and transformation in our lives. What is it that you really care about right now? How can you find the resources, both inner and outer, that will allow you to live with creativity and full integrity?

Human life is full of challenges and obstacles, especially right now on our planet. We can discover our own way of meeting these obstacles, using the power of this writing process to ‘rise to the occasion’ of our own life, exactly as it is.

Shayla studied for 25 years in India, and has been teaching writing, speaking, yoga and inquiry all over the world for many years. She writes professionally, and also just for the love of it. She has a teaching degree in yoga, a Phd in non-dual philosophy, and is a certified coach.

As a combined effort, this unique and inspiring class will be hosted by Kaslo life coach, Brodie Whitney in his mountain-view studio in Mirror Lake.

The Sacred Play Series: Awakening the Wonder of Your Personal Mystery

Five Sunday Afternoons, 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. – January 11th 18th, then February 1st, 8th, 15th, 2008

Week One – January 11, 2009: Re-imagining the Tarot Symbols, Remembering the Language of Your Soul

Tarot symbols have a reputation of being an esoteric knowledge held by a few. They aren’t! Tarot symbols, as symbols in general, are the visual language of your inner world, the realm of Soul. Symbols are a portal to your memory of the mystery & magic of life & the greater dance of which we each are a part. Surprise yourself & enjoy discovering what you already know about this valuable tool for personal growth & awakening consciousness.

Week Two – January 18, 2009: Soul Path Mythology, Reflecting on Your Personal Path and Purpose

There is a myth in the Tarot that the day you are born has significance beyond your astrological orientation. Your birth date also reveals your Soul Path, an eternal Self that holds the deep focus of your purpose & meaning. Explore this mythology experientially in a fun & informative way as you join with a your community of fellow Soul mates.

Week Three – February 1, 2009: Soul Paths on the Tree of Life, Understanding Your Personal Journey
& Supporting the Paths of Others

This week we look more profoundly into the relevance of your Soul Path to this time in our history, so full of transformative potential that staying asleep is not a sustainable option. The story of the Tree of Life, like the Mayan Calendar, is one that maps the human journey from our centuries of childhood into the maturity of both personal integrity & collective unity so needed in our world today. We each have our part to play.

Week Four – February 8, 2009: The Medicine Wheel Practice in The Mystery School

Fire, Earth, Water and Air are elemental threads that weave our lives into existence. This afternoon, we do a medicine walk through the elements & discover the mysterious beauty of creation within each other & ourselves. Bring balance into your world. This practice is a central feature of a Nelson community-based Mystery School that is scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2009.

Week Five – February 15, 2009: A Tarot Reading for the Community of Nelson

A spiritual teacher from India visiting the Kootenays said once that our region would be a “birthplace of a new civilization”. That’s a powerful vision for our community to consider when we come together. This afternoon, we are going to do an experiment. From those gathered, members of our community will represent us by choosing symbols relevant to awakening this collective potential. Carol will lay these symbols out in a traditional Celtic Cross pattern & interpret these symbols to offer us perspective, inspiration, & vision for our participation in our community in this coming year.

Carol Stewart is gifted in the use of symbols to awaken the richness, wisdom, & meaning of everyday life. For 33 years, her exploration of the Tarot, the Tree of Life & Medicine Wheel has guided her personal life journey. From her early training in education, mental health & personal growth, her life has been filled with creative adventure, discovery & service including workshops, leading journey’s to Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, & doing ceremony in many sacred sites, most recently in India and Mexico as well as Peru. For the last 29 years, her professional work with the Tarot symbols, as a form of spiritual counseling, has taken her into cities across North America. Carol is also the founder of The Mystery School, a 3-year cycle of workshops, for awakening & maturing one’s personal potential in the embrace of community. Her partner, Jim Quigley, began his spiritual life at Findhorn, a community in Scotland. Jim is a poet, contributes to community ceremonies, does volunteer work & assists Carol as co-leader in The Mystery School as well as taking people on sacred journeys to Peru. Nelson has been their home for over 13 years.

Dates: Five Sunday afternoons 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. January 11, 18, and February 1,8, & 15, 2009

Location: The Moving Centre – 533 Baker Street (upstairs, front room)
We would appreciate starting promptly at 1:30 p.m. each afternoon.
