Day Trip - Kaslo
Get ready for a day trip you will never forget when you drive North from Nelson along Highways 3A and 31 to Kaslo, BC. Kaslo lies upon the west shore of Kootenay Lake and sits between the Selkirk and Purcell Mountains. This charming town features Victorian architecture with modern day amenities including Vimy Park with a children’s playground, picnic area and ball fields.
Kaslo is host to two annual events that draw people from around the globe. Kaslo May Days and Kaslo Jazz Fest are celebrations enjoyed by the entire community bringing together the locals and inviting in visitors for days of celebration and song.
On quieter days Kaslo offers tours through the SS Moyie a retired CPR Sternwheeler that has been professionally restored and designated a national historic site. Learn about the life and times when the SS Moyie plied the waters of Kootenay Lake with true to life representations of the sights, sounds and smells from the turn of the century. Another stop of interest is the Langham Cultural Centre and Gallery.
Outdoor adventures abound no matter what your interests and skill level are. Cody Caves Provincial Park offers one to three hour splunking tours where you can experientially learn about the area’s geological past. There is hiking, camping, swimming, fishing and boating at Kootenay Lake Provincial Park as well as many of the surrounding areas. For the winter months snowmobile enthusiasts will find more trails than they can explore in a lifetime while the quieter crowd can traverse trails on X-country skis and snowshoes.
