Film Camp Overview
• Youth ages 8-18 create dynamic short digital films from start to finish
• All sessions take place on the 10th Street Campus of Selkirk College where participants have direct access to professional camera gear and the latest in digital film software
• Professional instructors facilitate a safe, fun and hands-on environment for all types of learners
• Participants work as a crew to develop the technical and creative skills of filmmaking
• Cooperation, communication and leadership skills are emphasized throughout the learning process
• The Graduation Celebration takes place on the last Friday. All family and friends are invited to a screening of the final films.
Program Descriptions by Age Group
NEW PROGRAM: 8-13 year olds
Participants of this age range work together to make their very own digital films. From Monday’s pitch to Friday afternoon’s screening, it’s a busy week of directing, shooting and editing for each and every filmmaker. Both new and experienced filmmakers welcome. No equipment necessary.
July 19-23, Monday to Friday 9AM-3PM
PRODUCTION CREW: 8-10 year olds
Participants work together to plan, shoot and edit their own digital film ideas as they have fun behind and in front of the camera. No equipment necessary.
August 16-20, Monday to Friday 9AM-3PM
DIRECTOR’S SEAT: 11-13 year olds
From the first day, participants get their hands on professional camera and sound gear, as they direct their own short digital films. In the post-production phase, participants use Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro, Apple’s premiere editing software. Some experience with cameras is good, but not necessary to enroll in this program. No equipment necessary.
August 9-13, Monday to Friday, 9AM-3PM
SENIOR DIRECTOR’S SEAT: 14-18 year olds
Earn 4 high school credits - Grade 10, 11, 12 participants who reside in BC
During the first week of this hands-on program participants pitch, script, direct, and produce their own short films using professional camera and sound gear. Once production is complete, the focus turns to editing, where participants learn
advanced editing techniques using Final Cut Pro and create an original soundtrack using Soundtrack Pro. A short internship is made available during the second week for participants who would like to work alongside a professional filmmaker to gain experience on the set or in the field. An emphasis on collaboration, responsibility and critical thinking run through all aspects of this intensive two week program. Participants do not need any gear or equipment to participate.
July 5-16, Monday to Friday, 9AM-3PM
Fees and Discounts 2010
One Week Programs, 8-13 year olds
$375, with bursaries up to $100 available
To receive a bursary up to $100, you need to make a request upon registering for the program for the amount you are seeking. Bursaries are conditional upon approval.
Two Week Program, 14-18 year olds
$350 for participants going into Grade 10, 11 and 12 who reside in BC.
$750, with bursaries up to $200 available
To receive a bursary up to $100, you need to make a request upon registering for the program for the amount you are seeking. Bursaries are conditional upon approval.
Fees do not include 5%GST
• With GST included the total for one week program is: $393.75
• Two week fee for Grades 10,11 and 12 (through Self Design) would be $367.50
• Two week fee for all other participants is $787.50
Additional Discounts
Parents/Guardians who register more than one participant in a family automatically receive a $50 discount on each additional child.
