November 27, 2008 – Sara Rainford of New Denver, BC, is an award-winning photographer and the latest professional to be featured at Elephant Mountain Gallery in Nelson. Her show will officially launch at a wine and cheese event on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, starting at 6:00 pm.

Sara is well-known to the outdoor community in Western Canada and has been photographing such activities as rock climbing, snowboarding, paragliding and mountaineering for over a decade. Her images have been published in Canadian Geographic, Gripped and Climbing magazines and her clients include the likes of Black Diamond, Mountain Equipment Co-op and the Banff Mountain Film Festival.

Sara’s photography has taken her to many destinations around the world and when asked where her favourite places to shoot are, she says, “I think you can always find something about a place that makes it intriguing. But I love Utah’s red sandstone set against a deep blue sky. I love the soft gold light in Southern France. And I love the colours in Cuba – I’ll just park myself at a café and photograph people wandering by. And I love the contradictions of Russia – stubby, grey Ladas driving past beautiful, ornate domed churches.”

That said, Sara believes you really have to know a place in order to do it justice. Which is why her favourite locations are those in her backyard, namely Slocan Lake, the Kohan Gardens in New Denver, and the numerous mountain meadows of the Valhallas. “I think the better you know a place the more adept you become at witnessing subtle changes and knowing the best time to shoot,” she says.

Sara’s photographic exhibition will be on display for the next two months at Elephant Mountain Gallery, 527 Josephine St. in Nelson (one block up from historic Baker Street). Everyone is invited to her official launch party at the Gallery on Wednesday, Dec. 3 starting at 6:00 pm.
