NPD Media Release

On May 4, 2017 at approximately 9:13 pm the Nelson Police Department received a call for service for a possible party at Red Sands Beach.  Upon police arrival, police located two people carrying camping equipment off the beach.  The pair advised police that they had set up a tent earlier in the evening and when they had returned to their tent they had noticed that it had been shredded and some of the their personal belongs had been destroyed.  They noticed a bear nearby and quickly left the area.  Police checked the area but the bear had already departed.

The Nelson Police Department would like to remind the public that there is no public camping in the city limits with the exception of the Nelson City Campground.  In addition, the Nelson Police Department would like to remind the public that this is the time for bears to be looking for food and to ensure that garbage, compost, and waste products are disposed of in a secure manner to avoid any possible confrontations with wildlife.

If you see a bear in your area, please contact the Nelson Police Department at (250) 354-3919 or the RAPP Hotline at 1-877-952-7277 or online at www.rapp.bc.ca.
