The Civic Theatre is excited to present our 2018 Oscar Party: Wonder Women: Strong Female Leads, taking place on March 3rd at 8:00pm. Dedicated to strong women from Nelson to Hollywood, we are thrilled to present an amazing night of performances in the style of the Weimar Cabaret and inspired by revolutionary women of the era. The event will focus on celebrating all the talented local #WonderWomen in our communty as well as the many #StrongFemaleLeads we have seen on the big screen in the past year, including Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Meryl Streep as Kay Graham, Saoirse Ronan as Lady Bird, Daisy Ridley as Rey and Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico in Star Wars and many more.

The evening will feature an extensive line-up of fantastic female performers, including live music from the amazing Melody Diachun, Catherine McGrath and Nicola Everton, burlesque performances from the fabulous Judith Stein, dance numbers from The Dancing Legs and Kootenay Hoop Troop, circus arts from Juliatroy and KyPo, live painting by the talented Avrell Fox and more! A full, licensed bar will be serving the sophisticated cocktails of the Weimar Cabaret era, as well as more modern selections. Catering of a variety of canapés will be provided by chef Jason Malloff of Cabin Restaurant. A boutique silent auction will be held, featuring a variety of Nelson’s most sought after items and experiences as well as several of the pieces produced by artist Avrell Fox over the course of the evening. Games of chance will be available throughout the event at our Molly’s Game-themed games table, followed by a screening of Oscar front-runner Lady Bird, starring Saoirse Ronan.

Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door, so get yours now! Groups of 10 can take advantage of the group rate of $300. All tickets are subject to our $1 facility fee. Tickets are also available at the membership table before movies. This is a licensed 19+ event.

We encourage everyone to come dressed as their favourite leading female character or counterpart, or in all black.


Featured Artists

Judith Stein was an internationally known performer from 1972 – 1990 who enjoyed traveling the world and life on the road. Somewhere along the way she found Nelson and she finally succumbed to the charm of the Kootenays. Thinking that chapter had closed in her life she preceded to pursue he love of skiing and enjoyed living the small town life. However, there is no rest for the wicked and she was rediscovered by the BC burlesque community and she found herself on stage once again. Soon after she was declared the Canadian Legend of Burlesque by the Burlesque Hall of Fame and she has been headlining festivals non stop ever since. She has traveled internationally across the globe all the way from New Zealand and Finland to Canada and the US where she has enjoyed sharing her sass, humor and love of burlesque on the stage.

Melody Diachun: JUNO nominee Melody Diachun (pronounced “DAY-shun”) is a Kootenay-based vocalist and recording artist who has been hailed as “a jazz singer of the first order” by the Times Colonist.
Melody is set to release her latest album Get Back to the Groove in the summer of 2018. She has previously released three critically acclaimed albums, all of which are on regular rotation on CBC Radio One. She has also appeared on the recordings of many other artists, notably “Metaphora” by Altered Laws featuring Melody Diachun and The Babayaga String Quartet. The album was named ‘Outstanding Jazz Recording’ at the 2008 Western Canadian Music Awards.
Television appearances include Melody’s own episode of the series “Jazzman”, which airs regularly on BRAVO!TV and The BET Network, and a guest appearance and performance on Joy TV’s “P3: People, Places and Perspectives”.
In 2009 Melody was nominated for ‘Female Vocalist of the Year’ at Canada’s National Jazz Awards.

The Dancing Legs: Get ready to be entranced & entertained by Johnny Girl, Shiraz DeVille & Aloë Vera of The Dancing Legs! These three multidisciplinary artists enjoy exploring the world of dance and performance drag and have a certain “je ne sais quoi” that will leave you wanting more!

The Kootenay Hoop Troop formed randomly and organically in the spring of 2017 in the Southern interior of Beautiful B.C. Canada… The 5 girls express their own hoop style individually but united they are children at heart who love to play. They carry a unique bond with each other which allows them to expel amazing energy. They have performed locally around the Kootenays and have even traveled as far as Jasper, Alberta to perform. The girls have a wide variety of acts to entertain all crowds and can fit to any theme! Blowing minds is mostly what they do best. You will see all kinds of tricks you never thought were possible with a hula hoop!

Catherine McGrath: Accordionist, multi-instrumentalist and singer Catherine McGrath has been exploring various folk and world roots styles for the past 30 years.  She is best known for her work with the Nelson klezmer and traditional jazz group Heavy Shtetl and as a local music instructor.

Nicola Everton: Clarinetist Nicola Everton performed with the Vancouver Symphony for over 20 years before taking up residence in the Kootenays.  She is a founding member of Selkirk Pro-Musica and she plays with the Galena and Selkirk Trios as well as Symphony of the Kootenays and the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. Catherine and Nicola will be joining forces at the Oscar Party to play some Klezmar and gypsy jazz.

Juliatroy is a local aerial performer who discovered her passion for the circus arts while living in Vancouver. Since moving to Nelson she has been a part of developing Discover Circus where she currently teaches classes in aerial hoop. She has a background performing in the aerial arts, most recently with her partner in The Birds Who Flew Beyond Time, presented by Discover Circus.

KyPo is the merging of two Acroyogis, Kyla and Poppy, who share a love for Acroyoga. Together they bring their strength, passion and playfulness to the practice and are thrilled to share this with others. They truly believe Acroyoga is for everyBody. Kyla and Poppy aspire to build an inclusive and thriving Acroyoga community in Nelson. They teach together at Discover Circus, and share their creations with the larger community through performance.

Avrell Fox is a long time Kootenay resident and established local artist. She works in different mediums but is best known for her painting and tattooing. Avrell recently opened Strange Society Tattoos in Nelson BC, and lives in Balfour with her husband, sons and dogs.

Lola Lane‘s nerdy love of all things glittery and astounding led her to burlesque 6 years ago, but she’s been on the stage since the moment she could walk. She’s brought you sextastic numbers like “Whole Lola Love”, “Whatever Lola Wants” and “Glitter in the Air” and she’s happy to be asked back to host the Oscar Party for the second year in a row.
