Teens Serving in Ecuador

How can we help care for abandoned children? Three teens, Brett Rigby, Nikolas Wood, and Chiffon Leyden, from the Nelson Christian Community School in Nelson are heading to Riobamba, Ecuador for the last two weeks of June to serve in The Ark Children’s Home run by Ron and Glenda Allan (originally of Kelowna).
Serving others and learning about another country’s culture are the goals for this trip. Their principal, and chaperone, Miss Teryn Butterworth explains, “These three students have learned a lot about having an authentic Christian faith while at our school. They have learned that being humble and serving others are the overflow of following Jesus. Now it’s time for them to practice what they have been learning.” The students also hope to learn more about another culture and therefore bring home a better understanding of cultural differences and diversity. “I want to learn about how Ecuadorians see God, and faith,” explains 14 year old Brett Rigby.
“The Ark Children’s Home” was started 12 years ago by Ron and Glenda Allen. Their motto is “sheltering children from the storms of life.” They strive to provide a loving atmosphere in which children can flourish. See their website at: www.arkchildrenshomes.com.
Nelson Christian Community School aims to assist families by providing students with a Christ-centered, biblically integrated education, which instills the vision and practice of excellence in academics, moral character, and service to others. It is an independent, K-9 inter-denominational, BC Certified school serving Nelson and surrounding areas. They seek to create a warm, caring and well-ordered environment in which students will be able to achieve their maximum potential in learning. This is the second outreach trip to Ecuador by NCCS.
