Threading My Way Through Tuscany
A Fabric Art Show by Kate Bridger
Mid-November at Gallery 378, 378 Baker St., Nelson (beneath the Craft Connection)
“After several years of planning and anticipation, I finally went on my walking tour of Tuscany. I was on a pilgrimage to verify the existence of terracotta pots spewing red geraniums; luminous poppies growing in unkempt hedgerows; ample bodied red wine; pesto, pasta and pinto beans; history cohabiting with mopeds and TV aerials; fine art very fine art; fine shoe leather; winding lanes leading to obscure olive farms; and statues mostly virile naked men with reliious immunity. It was all there. And so was the rain Š lots of it. But we kept walking. And as we kept walking we greedily snatched images with our digital cameras. I brought all my pixels home, laid them out before me and knew I had the raw materials for an exciting body of work. Would it have been easier to buy postcards? Maybe. But, I cranked up my sewing
machine and threaded my way through Tuscany eager to make ten damp, but magical days last a whole lot longer and adding a little sunshine of my own to the memories.”
