What’s Playing at The Civic, 21 – 27, December 2018

Dive into The Civic Theatre’s Holiday blockbuster

I’m having fish tonight!Jason Momoa plays a briny version of Aquaman; not the blond Adonis of the comic series, which is a good move, I prefer my deep sea superheros to smell of seaweed not patchouli like a Californian surfer.

James Wan of the Fast and Furious 7 and Conjuring takes over Snyder vision of the DC extended universe.

Coming next: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

We’ve raised over $8,000!

Together, we have reached the one-third mark in our Bridge the Gap fundraising campaign. Your donations are helping us to safeguard the social programming that is central to our charitable mission. To all our friends who have contributed thus far, Thank you!

Last weekend, the theatre came alive with our free family-friendly Home for the Holidays event, all while raising a car-load of in-kind donations for the Nelson Community Food Centre.  This week, The Civic Theatre opened its doors for an end-of-year student screening on Friday morning.  These are just two recent events that highlight how The Civic Theatre is more than a commercial movie theatre – at our core, we exist to make our community a better place to live.

This type of community programming is threatened by the volatility of our current single-screen business model.  Our financial survival relies on screenings of blockbuster movies; however, the distribution requirements for these types of films requires that they monopolize a screen for the duration of their time in the box office. With only one screen at our disposal, this means we cannot run any other special events or film screenings, limiting our ability to schedule ongoing and reliable social programs.

A capital renovation, adding two additional screens, is on our horizon. The addition of these new spaces within our current footprint will not only alleviate our scheduling limitations, but also allow us to become 100% self-funded and focus our energy on social impact.  Your donations are helping us to bridge the gap as we prepare for this renovation.

There is still time to contribute to this campaign.  To join your community in supporting this vision we all share, click here to make your donation now, or download our giving form to make your gift by mail or in person the next time you visit the theatre.
