What’s Playing at The Civic, 25 – 31 January 2019

Mary Poppins floats in for a visit to The Civic Theatre + ROMA on the big screen!

Newsletter January 25 – 31
A Very Different Pair of Live-in NaniesMary Poppins may be a crack ace at taking care of the Banks children, but it is the story centered around the life of a live-in housekeeper to a middle-class family in 1970’s Mexico inspired by the director, Alfonso Curan’s, own childhood, that will really demonstrate how a magical being can drop in and cement the bonds of family.

Emily Blunt brings Mary Poppins back to colourful life in, you guessed it, Mary Poppins Returns, playing Friday – Tuesday. Our second nanny, stepping off the small screen onto the big, this coming Thursday, is really a miracle.  In ROMA, Curan has crafted an epic tale of intimate memory. Told through the most sublime black and white photography, a country at a particular tumultuous time plays as a sweeping backdrop to the small emotionally charged story of a collapsing middle-class family via its live-in housekeeper who oscillates between servant and member of the family, and needing to be looked after to saving grace to this unstable family.

This week’s films feature family as a core of love that both draws in outsiders, and draws strength from them, to create an expanded definition of what family is beyond blood ties.  An important message for these times.  Don’t miss the coming soon film, Shoplifters, that expands on this theme even more.

Also showing this week, The Association of West Kootenay Rock Climbers present, Reel Rock 13, a brand new collection of the year’s best climbing films, delivering jaw-dropping action, soulful journeys and rollicking humor.

Coming next: Vice, The Favourite, Shoplifters
