What’s Playing at The Civic (Feb 17 – 23)

Feb17-23civic_flyerSing your songs for 20th Century Women this week at The Civic

Dapper Koala Buster Moon presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times, (sounds like The Civic before the community came together to save it). Facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he takes one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition. A mouse, a timid elephant, a pig, a gorilla and a punk-rock porcupine take the stage to Sing (G) their animal hearts out.
Playing aside Sing, 20th Century Women (14A) Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening) is a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie, at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women — Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’ home and Julie (Elle Fanning), a savvy and provocative teenage neighbour — to help with Jamie’s upbringing.
For our Doc Wednesday, Kirsten Johnson, a powerful 21st Century voice who has worked as cinematographer on 48 documentary projects and shorts, directs Cameraperson, Exposing her role behind the camera. Kirsten Johnson reaches into the vast trove of footage she has shot over decades around the world. What emerges is a visually bold memoir and a revelatory interrogation of the power of the camera.
And for our Thursday film, from Asghar Farhadi, director of A Separation and The Past (screened as a Thursday film in 2014) is back with The Salesman (14A) up for a 2016 best Foreign Language Oscar. After their flat becomes damaged, Emad and Rana, a young couple living in Tehran, Iran, must move into another apartment. Once relocated, a sudden eruption of violence linked to the previous tenant of their new home dramatically changes their lives, creating a simmering tension between husband and wife.
Coming next: Coldsmoke Opener, The Civic’s 4th annual Oscar Party – One Night in La La Land, Live-stream of the Academy Awards, Fury Road (Black and Chrome Edition) Member Monday and Julietta
