April 15-21, 2019- Prevention of Violence Against Women Week

“The journey towards ending violence against women and girls is not an easy one- it is long and challenging- but it is possible. Events like this one are an important step along that journey. They are an opportunity to unite around a common purpose, to share ideas and success stories, and to reaffirm our commitment to meeting this challenge.”

The Honourable Patty Hajdu

Minister of Status of Women

Violence against women affects all of us: mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, partners and friends. A movement began 24 years ago to encourage members of the public to express the need to prevent and reduce violence against women. This public engagement also raises awareness about the unacceptability of violence against women, youth and children in our communities. This week will take place between April 15-21, 2019.

Supporters of the BC Prevention of Violence Against Women week believe that all women, youth and children have the right to live free from all forms of violence.

Statistics show that women and girls continue to be more vulnerable than men to all forms of violence. This is particularly true for Indigenous women who are three times more likely than non-Indigenous women to report experiencing violence.

The Nelson Violence Against Women in Relationships Committee (VAWIR) will be hosting a Service Providers Networking Meeting on April 16th, 2019 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Public Health Multipurpose Room 209 located on the 2nd floor, 333 Victoria Street, Nelson, B.C.

This is an opportunity for all service providers to share and/or learn about a range of services being offered to support families impacted by abuse.
