  • Nelson Civic Theatre 19 – 24 March, 2022

“As we leave Gotham following this week’s on-release opening of ‘The Batman’, and before we jump into a string of sweet on-release weeks of blockbusters (‘Morbius’ – Apr. 1, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ – Apr. 8, and ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ – Apr. 15), The Civic Theatre is loading you up with 2-weeks of the Wheaties of the cinematic world as lead-up to the 2022 Oscars, live stream on Mar. 27th.
To compliment your knowledge of the ‘Best Picture’ category from The Civic’s presentation of them over the past months and your Netflix account, we are excited to provide a slate of ‘Best International Film’, ‘Best Doc’, and ‘Best Doc, Live Action and Animation Shorts’ nominees, so you can select your pics for the Oscar ballot with confidence.

Titles include: ‘Flee’ (Best Doc, Best Animated, Best International nominee), ‘The Worst Person in the World’ (Best International nominee), ‘Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom’ (Best International nominee), ‘Encanto’ (Best Animated Feature nominee), ‘Oscar Shorts (Docs)’, ‘Oscar Shorts (Live Action)’, ‘Oscar Shorts (Animated)’, ‘Writing With Fire’ (Best Doc nominee) and as a bonus, Finland’s entry for the Oscars and Cannes Grand Prix winner, ‘Compartment No. 6’.

All these titles can be purchased separately or you can choose to purchase an Oscar Run Nominee Festival Pass and come to as many of these screenings as you choose for only $45 – 9 films for less than the cost of 4 screenings.

Aside from the Oscar nom slate, we also will be screening another special South Asian Movie Club presentation, ‘Aaja Mexico Challiye’ and two new Canadian film releases. From Quebec, AFKO co-presents ‘Une Révision’ as part of the Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Francophone, and from Nova Scotia, ‘Dawn, Her Dad and the Tractor’, about a trans woman who returns to her family farm after the death of her mother where she sees her father and sister for the first time since her transition.

Watch the trailers below to learn more about each title, and then get out your bowl, spoon and milk (or oat milk if you’re dairy intolerant) and dig in.”

  • Playing at the Nelson Civic Theatre 18 -24 Feb. 2022

    And the Pitch by Jason!

“It feels like we have been in ‘uncharted’ territory for this whole damn pandemic, so it will be nice to rely on the tested talents of Antonio Banderas, Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland in the well mapped adventure genre under the experienced leadership of Zombieland director, Ruben Fleischer, to whisk us away in the epic spectacle of Uncharted playing this Friday at The Civic Theatre.

Street-smart thief Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune lost by Ferdinand Magellan 500 years ago. What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs. If Nate and Sully can decipher the clues and solve one of the world’s oldest mysteries, they stand to find $5 billion in treasure and perhaps even Nate’s long-lost brother…but only if they can learn to work together.

Join us for the adventure this week, Feb 18-24th.

  • This Week at the Civic Theatre

“The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards just dropped this morning and the Civic’s confirmed Feb. 11th booking, Nightmare Alley, made the list for ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Production Design’, ‘Best Cinematography’, and ‘Best Costume Costume Design’.

Guillermo del Toro, who won ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Direction’ Oscars in 2017 for his last feature, Shape of Water, brings his unique and lush visual style to this neo-noir set against a 1940’s carnival.  Down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle endears himself to a clairvoyant and her mentalist husband at a traveling carnival. Using newly acquired knowledge, Carlisle crafts a golden ticket to success by swindling the elite and wealthy. Hoping for a big score, he soon hatches a scheme to con a dangerous tycoon with help from a mysterious psychiatrist who might be his most formidable opponent yet.

Of his nomination del Toro told Deadline, “I am very happy and grateful… The key is to be in the conversation. We are very proud of our film and the work everyone delivered. This is a great blessing. We are in great company with filmmakers we admire and we thank the Academy and feel elated. Maybe the pandemic affected me in ways that I may not even see, but it was very moving and very cherished to get this surprise and love this morning. Covid showed us all how tenuous it is to plan, craft and release a film. And how being in this craft is a joy not to be taken for granted.” I agree Guillermo; and being able to see movies together in cinema should not be taken for granted either.  I hope you will all come out to see this visual treat on the big-screen this week.

  • This Week at the Civic Theatre

” Join us this week at the Civic for an A24 extravaganza of indie darlings and arthouse cinema! Since 2012, the independent film studio A24 has been producing intelligent, aesthetically beautiful films. Enjoy the latest offerings from A24 at your local independent cinema!”

  • This week at the Civic Theatre

“When I hear the names Coen, Scott and Branagh, I reach for my cheque book (debit card), because I’m going to the movies!

It’s a cinema as art kind of week with this week’s triple billing at The Civic Theatre.  Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical film, Belfast, which chronicles the life of a working class family and their young son’s childhood during the tumult of the late 1960s in the Northern Ireland capital has been receiving all kinds of awards buzz and is a visual black and white treat for the big screen.

Also in glorious black and white, Joel Coen’s treatment of the classic Shakespearean play, The Tragedy of Macbeth, stars Denzel Washington and last year’s Oscar best actress winner, Frances McDormand as Mr. and Lady Macbeth.  Visually stunning, this should definitely be viewed writ large and not on your streamer.

The final offering, and the only in colour, is the colourful portrayal of the very colourful members in the House of Gucci. When Patrizia Reggiani, an outsider from humble beginnings, marries into the Gucci family, her unbridled ambition begins to unravel their legacy and triggers a reckless spiral of betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately…murder.
You had me at betrayal. See you at The Civic.”

    Have a good weekend! Caitlyn
