NELSON ARTWALK DATES SET FOR 2009

The opening dates for the 2009 Artwalk, the 21st in its history, will be Friday, July 3 and Friday, August 7. This year’s Festival closes on Saturday, September 12.

One of Nelson’s most popular summertime activities, ArtWalk is a major event for residents, tourists and visitors alike who jam the streets on opening nights.

Says Administrator, Kathy Hartley, “During times of economic downturn, the arts still have the power to attract visitors. We all need art, in all its forms, to brighten and enrich our lives.”

ArtWalk is organized by the Nelson and District Arts Council.

Artists, businesses and galleries who want to participate can apply to the Arts Council office.

Kootenay BC – July 4 & 5 weekend, Endless Adventure is teaching couples to kayak and have fun on the lake with each other. Our experienced instructors are geared up to teach technique, rescue, strokes, how to load your boat without strain and much more.

By offering this program, Endless Adventure hopes to encourage proper paddling performance and connection with your significant other. This is a great way for couples to stay active together and enjoy the outdoors. Some wildlife can only be seen from the water.

Portrait workshop by internationally acclaimed artist, Kristy Gordon, will be taking place in her home town, Nelson, July 7 - 9, 2009. Kristy trained with master painter Yuqi Wang in 2007. Later that year Mr. Wang asked Kristy to be his assistant for a 9 week oil painting course at the Andreva Portrait Academy in Santa Fe. The following year Kristy was invited to be teacher's assistant to Jeremy Lipking at the Grand Central Academy in New York City.
Since then, Kristy has received a Merit Award from Daniel Greene in the Salon International 2009; Third Prize at the Portrait Society of Canada International Portrait Competition & Best of Show in the National Art Premier,Illinois.

The first annual “Bard in the Bush Shakespeare Festival” - “Shakespeare Shorts V” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”!
“Shakespeare Shorts V” kicks off the “Bard in the Bush Shakespeare Festival” - Wednesday to Saturday, July 8-11th & 15-18th, 2009, at 7:30pm, in Nelson’s picturesque Gyro Park. ‘Ye Olde Stone Quarry’ in Nelson’s Gyro Park is the perfect venue for “Shakespeare Shorts V”. From downtown, enter ‘Ye Olde Stone Quarry’ via the trail at the upper end of Vernon St., or park above by the pool area, pass the playground, and follow the footpath and stone stairs down. Admittance to the show is a suggested donation of $10. Recommended for ages 12+. BYOC means bring your own chair, (though some are available if need be).

Designed to be a friendly, easy approach to networking, Mingle-inc is a monthly cocktail lounge evening hosted by Blend for women in business. Think of it as speed dating for business. Drop in participants will be encouraged to talk to someone new every 15 minutes or so. This is a no sweat event, meaning that everyone is there to share ideas, have fun, make contacts & be inspired.

Mingle-inc will be held every 2nd Thursday of the month at Louie’s lounge in Nelson from 5pm to 7pm. There will be music, a relaxing atmosphere and you can order any of the trendy cocktails or dishes from the menu. Come after work for a drink and bring a lot of business cards! This is a free event.

The 4th Annual Pedal Along a Rail Route, PARR4, is an annual event in effort to raise funds for Our Daily Bread, Nelson's hot meal program.

Cost: $40 entry fee or $75 in pledges.
Starts: 7:15am ride from Kootenay Christian Fellowship hall to Celgar Mill Parking lot.
Ride: begins 8:15am by bus from Celgar to Paulson Detour Rd. Ends back at Celgar Mill.

Ride lasts about 4 to 5 hours mostly downhill. This is not a race, but a ride over trestles, through tunnels and with great views over the Arrow Lake. (Bring flashlight).

At the conclusion of the ride, Castlegar Christian Fellowship will provide BBQ hotdogs and refreshments.

Return trip to Celgar Mill and Nelson provided.

Nelson’s Keep the Beat youth group is hosting this student art show in order to raise funds to put on their main event (A 10-hour music festival at Lakeside Park on July 29, 2009 to raise money for War Child Canada). Entry is by donation and the event will include:
- Art show and silent auction
- Live music
- Delicious baking

Please join us for an evening of art created by local youth to support a great cause!

A free 10 hour live music concert, from noon to 10:00 pm by the flagpole in Lakeside Park.

This is the 4th year that this youth-led event has been held - to raise awareness about children affected by war and to collect donations for War Child Canada to provide services for those children.

All ages are welcome. A full lineup of musicians will be posted but it can be announced now that Stephen Fearing and Dan Mangen will be peforming.
