  • Artist Barbara Brown, Film Showing & Book Reading at Gallery 444, Nelson

All for the Love of the Forest
Film Screening & Book Reading by Artist Barbara Brown, at Gallery 444, Nelson

Slocan Valley artist/author/film-maker Barbara Brown will show her latest film, On BEAUTY As We Come to it in the Forest, and read from her book, Volume II, SYLVAN REFLECTIONS: Wanderings, Paintings & Ponderings from the Forest, at SOMA Sound & Events • Gallery 444, up the stairs at 444 Baker St, Nelson (next door to Moon Monster) on Sunday July 27th, 6:30 – 8:30 pm. By donation ($10 suggested).

Brown’s work is all about sharing the love she feels for the forest where she lives and walks daily.

    The film is a half-hour deep-dive into the beauty, magic and teachings of the forest;
with stunning old-growth forest footage by cinematographer Isaac Carter of ICandyFIlms and a beautifully evocative original soundtrack by composer Noel Fudge.

As she says in the film: “Come, let’s go for a walk together in the forest and contemplate Nature’s Beauty. Let’s revel in the Beauty of Nature, and ponder the Nature of Beauty…as we come to it in the forest.”

After the film, Brown will read from her second SYLVAN REFLECTIONS book, of paintings, poems, and poetic prose – all inspired by time spent in the woods.

Ellen Dee Davidson, author of Sacred Forest Bathing says: “Barbara gives us a peek into the transformative power of spending time in the wild woods. Using her artistic talent, the film and book succeed in bringing us into the enchanted realm of a healthy forest, where we may find ourselves soothed, heartened, inspired, uplifted and healed.”

Five of Brown’s forest paintings are on display in the gallery throughout July and August as a part of the group show: “True Nature —bringing a voice to the environment, nature, and humanity’s relationship with it”, along with other artists Christina Bykowa, Christopher Mcholm and Sam Strachan.

  • Nelson Italian-Canadian Society Supports Breath of Spring Campaign

In May, the Nelson Italian-Canadian Society (NICS) held their annual Spring Banquet, which, over the
years, has raised funds to help support a variety of charitable and not for profit groups in the
    community.
The NICS teamed up with Ferraro Foods in Trail, who generously donated all the food for the dinner.
The donation from Ferraro Foods translated into a much larger revenue from the banquet.
NICS President Paul Boscariol said, “Over the years we have shopped at Ferraro Foods for the
specialty Italian foods for our events and they have always supported our efforts. This donation
caught us by surprise when they indicated a strong desire to help us make a larger contribution to the
    Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation.”
As a result the NICS is pleased to make a donation of $5500 to help the Kootenay Lake Hospital
Foundation purchase essential medical equipment, specialty treatment chairs, and other key
furnishings for the recently renovated Chemotherapy/IV Infusion Clinic.
The sellout crowd of 176 people at the banquet enjoyed a sumptuous Italian six course feast. It took
a group of 20 NICS volunteers to plan the event, set up the hall, prep and cook the dinner and clean
    up following the event.
For those fortunate enough to have enjoyed the dinner, it will be one to savour as head cook Cosimo
Chirico determined that would be his final large scale event. Over the years Cosimo has been a
mainstay in the kitchen at NICS events, but not to worry, he has passed on many of his skills and
recipes to some of the younger NICS volunteers.
That includes the recipe for the Italian spaghetti sauce which will be available for sale again late in the
    Fall.
The NICS would like to thank all those who attended the banquet and who have supported all our
fundraising efforts over the years. You are truly an integral part of the sharing spirit in Nelson!
