    The Nelson Police Department would like to warn the public of a cougar that has been observed in various areas of Nelson over the past few days.
     
    Some safety tips if you encounter a cougar:
     

    1. Never approach a cougar
    2. Immediately and forcefully show the animal that you’re a human by waving your arms and being vocal
    3. Never turn your back to a cougar. Always face it while slowly backing away.
    4. Never run away as it may trigger a chase response from the cougar.
    5. If a cougar attacks, fight back.

     
    Residents are encouraged to monitor their children closely outdoors and to bring their pets in at night.
     
    The BC Conservation Service has been advised of the recent cougar activity in Nelson. Further sightings can be reported by calling the RAPP line at 1-877-952-RAPP or by cellular art #7277.

    SUBJECT: Nelson Police Department File 2020-4129
     
    The Nelson Police Department is requesting the assistance of the general public to identify 2 persons of interest in an ongoing mischief investigation.  In the overnight hours of 14-15 August 2020, a male and a female were captured on surveillance cameras causing damage to businesses and properties in the Mall and Downtown areas of Nelson.  Their pictures are attached.
     
    The male is described as light-skinned Caucasian, average height, thin build, mid 30’s, longer curly brown hair in a pony tail, with a trimmed beard.  He wore khaki pants, and a light grey or khaki short sleeved collared shirt.  He wore a black or dark coloured backpack.
     
    The female is described as light-skinned Caucasian, shorter, slim build, late 20’s to early 30’s, with shoulder length dark hair.  She wore dark pants, a tie dyed short sleeved shirt, grey ankle boots, and a pink shawl or scarf.  She carried a shoulder bag.
     
    The Nelson Police would like to identify these persons of interest to further their criminal investigation.  Any witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the identities and locations of these 2 individuals are asked to contact the lead investigator, Cst Matt Caldwell at 250-354-3919 or at caldwell@nelsonpolice.ca.  Persons with information that wish to remain anonymous may also contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or bccrimestoppers.com.

     

  • Nelson Police Department

    On Monday, August 3, 2020, at 9:26 am, Nelson Police Department received multiple reports of a plane crash in the area of the 400 block of Lakeside Drive, Nelson.
    Nelson Police Department and Nelson Fire & Rescue responded to the area. A small plane was located crashed in the parking lot of the Wholesale Club located at 402 Lakeside Drive.
    The two occupants of the plane sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
    Nelson Police Department and Transport Canada continue to investigate the cause of the crash. Preliminary findings suggest the plane was attempting to land at Nelson Airport (CZNL), when a wind gust caused the plane to be drawn away from the runway and coming to rest in the parking lot of 402 Lakeside Drive. A vehicle in the parking lot received minor damage but no one else was injured.
    The plane has since been removed and the area has been re-opened.
    Nelson Police would like to thank everyone that provided assistance with this incident.

  • Nelson Police Department

    A 55 year-old Abbotsford man has succumbed to his injuries in hospital after being assaulted with a weapon on July 16, 2020. Abbotsford Police Department has previously confirmed that this male was one of their officers.

    Nelson Police and Emergency Services responded to a disturbance call on July 16 at 1145 pm, where they found a seriously injured male. The man was taken to hospital in critical condition and has since died.

    A 26 year old male was identified and apprehended on scene. The male is facing charges of aggravated assault. This investigation is ongoing and will continue to develop in the coming days and weeks.

    We offer our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased officer.

    Nelson Police Department file 20-3531 / Assault

     

    On July 16, 2020 Nelson Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance in the 500 block of Baker Street Nelson, BC.

    Nelson Police and Emergency Services arrived in the area and located a seriously injured male who was transported to hospital by BC Ambulance Service.

    This investigation is in the preliminary stages. However, it appears that one male was causing a disturbance in the roadway when the victim approached him and a physical altercation ensued. The victim, a 55 year old man from Abbotsford, has sustained life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital in critical condition.

    A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident.

    Nelson Police Department General Investigation Section, in consultation with RCMP Major Crimes Unit, are continuing the investigation into this matter.

    The Nelson Police Department would like to pass on a sincere thank you to all the first responders, medical staff and civilians who stepped up to assist the injured male and who have assisted Nelson Police Department in the investigation.

    UPDATE***Media Release / Serious Assault

    The Abbotsford Police Department confirms that one of our off-duty police officers intervened in a disturbance incident in Nelson, BC on July 16, 2020. As a result of this incident, our officer remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

    We will not be releasing the officer’s name at this time so that the family can have privacy. AbbyPD is and will continue to support this officer’s family and friends during this emotional and terribly difficult time. This incident has had significant impact of the Abbotsford Police Department family and we continue to provide resources and support for our staff.

    The Nelson Police Department continue their investigation into this incident and all media inquiries and updates with respects to this investigation will be released by Nelson Police Department.

    The Abbotsford Police Department would like to pass on a heartfelt thank you to all the medical staff and civilians who stepped up to assist our officer. THANK YOU.
