  • Nelson Police Department Update – Drug Advisory

On February 16, 2020 Nelson police Department responded to three separate calls for medical assistance at three separate locations for reports of street drug overdose. Regrettably, two individuals passed away in spite of efforts to revive them performed by BC Ambulance, Nelson Fire Rescue Service and a Kootenay Lake Hospital Emergency Doctor on scene.
The third individual was treated and transported to hospital where they remain under medical supervision. Nelson Police Department released a public health advisory hours after these incidents but did not confirm that two people had passed away as family members had not yet been notified. Nelson police recommend that the previous public warning remain in effect and would like to extend our condolences on behalf of Nelson Police Department staff and the community for the tragic loss that these families have incurred.
Police are continuing the investigation in order to provide the public with the most up to date information on what street drugs are involved. However, at this time due to information gathered it appears that much of the illicit drug supply in town may be of danger to those who consume it.
Drug consumers are advised not to use alone, to carry naloxone and to get drugs tested if possible. If you witness someone overdosing, call 911 immediately.

    Sincerely,

NELSON POLICE DEPARTMENT RESTORATIVE JUSTICE CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL RESTORATIVE JUSTICE WEEK 2019
This year Nelson Police Department Restorative Justice (NPDRJ) celebrates Restorative Justice Week in collaboration with Kutenai Art Therapy Institute with An Art Show for Social Justice; Exploring Restorative Practice. Join us for an evening of artwork, community and connection at 191 Baker Street in Nelson on Friday November 22 from 7-9 PM.
Correction Services Canada’s Restorative Justice Division proclaims the third week in November to focus on the important work being done by Restorative Justice (RJ) Practitioners and advocates in communities across Canada.
A grass-roots, non-adversarial, non-retributive approach to justice that views crime and conflict as harm done to people and relationships, RJ is a philosophy that emphasizes healing in victims, accountability of offenders, and the involvement of citizens.
NPDRJ’s volunteer RJ Practitioners bring together those who have been affected by crime, those who are responsible for the harm, their respective supporters and other stakeholders into a conference designed to empower all participants to share their experience and explore ways to repair the harm.  A resolution agreement is carefully drafted based on the collaborative efforts of all participants.
Through Restorative Justice, a unique understanding about harm and its impact on individuals and the community is gained. Victims are central to the process. They are supported to express their needs and concerns. Offenders are supported to take responsibility for their actions and to work to heal the harm.
Nelson Police Department Restorative Justice is funded by the City of Nelson, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, and community sponsors.

    NPD File 2019-4972 Search Warrant.

On October 25, 2019 Nelson Police Department executed a search warrant at a home in the Gyro Park area of Nelson. NPD obtained an arrest and entry warrant for premises after a lengthy investigation into reports of drug activity at the home. A male and female, who are known to police, were arrested inside the home and a quantity of suspected cocaine and ketamine were located upon search. NPD are forwarding charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking against the male arrested in the home.

NPD File 2019-4907 and 2019-4955 Assault with a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon, Arrest Warrants.

On October 16, 2019 Nelson Police Department responded to a report of an assault with a weapon at a residence in the Rosemont area. Upon arrival on scene members identified a male victim who had been stuck in the head with what he believed to be a sock filled with rocks or a similar heavy object(s). The victim informed police that the male suspect also tried to stab him prior to fleeing the residence. After investigation, the male was identified as Eldon Lemaigre (40 years). Lemaigre is not well known to NPD but has an extensive history of violent behavior in several provinces including BC and Saskatchewan.

On October 18th NPD received information that allowed police to locate Lemaigre at Our Daily Bread. Due to Lemaigre’s concerning violent history all NPD members on shift responded with the assistance of Nelson RCMP. After the building was safely contained by police, Lemaigre was located inside and arrested without incident. Lemaigre was charged with Assault with a weapon, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Breach of his release conditions. Lemaigre was also found to have several warrants from the Lower Mainland. Lemaigre was transported to Okanagan Correction Centre where he remains in custody.

Any inquiries or questions by media can be directed to Sgt. Nate Holt at NPD.
