-Failure to Indicate Leads to Roadside Prohibition and 30 Day Impoundment.-

On October 18, 2026, at approximately 2:30 a.m., an officer with the Nelson Police Department was conducting routine patrol when they observed a pickup truck make a left turn without signalling. The officer followed the vehicle and observed it make a second left turn, again without signalling. The officer subsequently conducted a traffic stop.

Upon speaking with the driver, a 23-year-old man from Kaslo, the officer detected the odour of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The driver, who provided a valid driver’s licence, stated that he had consumed one alcoholic drink approximately 30 minutes earlier.

The officer subsequently administered a roadside breath test using an approved screening device (ASD). The result was “Fail.” The driver was then given an opportunity to provide a sample using a second screening device, which also returned a “Fail” result.

As a result, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The pickup truck was towed from the scene, and the driver departed on foot.

-19-Year-Old’s Loud Exhaust Leads 30-day vehicle Impoundment-

On October 21, 2026, at approximately 9:19 p.m., an officer with the Nelson Police Department was parked and writing a report when a truck with a notably loud exhaust passed by at a high rate of speed. The officer activated their emergency lights and siren and conducted a traffic stop.

After the truck stopped, the driver exited the vehicle while holding onto the door for stability. The officer directed the driver to return to the vehicle. Upon speaking with the driver, the officer observed unusual behaviour, including difficulty reciting his full date of birth and speaking and moving at an unusually slow pace. The officer also detected a strong odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath.

The driver, a 19-year-old Nelson resident, provided a valid driver’s licence. Based on the observations made during the interaction, the officer suspected the driver had alcohol in his body and demanded a breath sample for roadside alcohol screening.

The driver provided a sample to an approved screening device, which returned a result of “Fail.”

The man was advised he was under arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

Ultimately the driver was served with a 90-day driving prohibition and given a 30-day vehicle impoundment.

“Every impaired driver removed from the road is a potential collision prevented. The Nelson Police Department remains committed to road safety and appreciates the efforts of our officers who work to keep all road users safe.” said Deputy Chief Jason Jewkes.”

HALLOWEEN MESSAGING FROM NELSON POLICE DEPARTMENT.

With Halloween fast approaching, the Nelson Police Department would like to remind everyone to take extra precautions to help keep our community members safe.

As ghouls, goblins, witches, and superheroes take to the streets, motorists and pedestrians alike are encouraged to stay alert and to keep an eye out for one another.

The Nelson Police Department are encouraging people to:

Wear bright coloured clothing and use reflective materials, flashlights, glow sticks, or other light sources to help drivers see you in the dark.

Cross at designated crosswalks whenever possible and always look both ways before crossing the street.

If you plan on drinking, ensure you have a safe drive home with a sober driver.

The Nelson Police department hopes everyone has a safe and spooky Halloween.
