Traffic Infraction Leads to Prohibited Driver and Inactive Insurance Discovery

On Monday October 26, 2026, a Nelson Police Officer was conducting proactive traffic enforcement near Trafalgar Middle School when they observed a driver, later identified as male, 68 years old from Nelson B.C., fail to stop properly at a stop sign and proceeded to roll stop into the intersection before making a left turn east on Josephine St. The disregard of the traffic laws resulted in another vehicle heading Eastbound on Josephine St. having to react quickly and slow down to avoid a collision. The officer conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle who committed the infraction and observed a cover on the rear license plate. The driver, identified as a 68-year-old male from Nelson B.C., failed to provide a driver’s license and valid insurance when requested by the officer. Upon further investigation, the driver was determined to be driving while prohibited and was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while prohibited. In addition to the appearance notice for driving while prohibited, the driver was subsequently issued a ticket for inactive insurance as well as for having an obstructed license plate.

Impaired Driving Investigation Leads to Immediate Roadside Prohibition and Vehicle Impoundment

On October 25, 2026, at approximately 1:55am, an officer conducting routine patrols of the downtown area observed a vehicle displaying an “N” magnet on the back exhibit unusual and erratic driving behaviours consistent with a driver who may be operating a vehicle while impaired. Due to the concerning behaviour, the officer initiated a traffic stop to conduct a sobriety test on the driver who was identified as a 43-year-old male from Nelson, B.C. During the interaction, the officer detected an odour of liquor from the driver’s breath. The driver provided a breath sample into an approved screening device which resulted in a “fail” reading. The driver was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition and vehicle impoundment notice.

As we are approaching the holiday season, Nelson Police would like to remind the public that operating a motor vehicle while impaired is a serious public safety risk. If you have consumed drugs or alcohol, ensure that you plan ahead for a safe ride and do not get behind the wheel. Some safe ride options include having a designated (sober) driver, taking public transit or taxi, ridesharing or staying over in an appropriate setting if no sober ride is available.
