COLUMBIA KOOTENAY CULTURAL ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES 2020–2021 FUNDED PROJECTS
(Columbia Basin) – Over 150 arts and culture projects—including the Columbia Basin Culture Tour—
have received a total of $750,000 in funding support for the 2020-21 season through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), in partnership with Columbia Basin Trust.
    “Every year, I’m impressed by the scope of the projects for which applicants are seeking funding;
there are artists taking their first steps towards becoming professionals, to individuals seeking support
for major projects, and everything in between. The CKCA Steering Committee members are excited to see the projects that receive funding successfully bring their efforts to fruition. We are also very pleased to continue our relationship with Columbia Basin Trust, by fostering excellence in arts and culture and contributing to livable communities across the region,” said Laura White, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance Chair.
Funding applications were adjudicated in May by the CKCA Steering Committee, with input from community arts councils. Support will go toward a wide range of projects, including individual and group projects, master classes, touring and major exhibition projects.

“Supporting artistic and cultural efforts around the Basin brings vibrancy to our communities, whether it is through paint, music, theatre or craft,” said Michelle d’Entremont, Manager, Delivery of Benefits, Columbia Basin Trust. “It is incredible to see a wide range of projects again this year as Basin artists
continue to bring joy and beauty to our communities.”
CKCA funding helps individuals and organizations realize arts and cultural projects across all arts disciplines, including visual art, theatre, music, dance, media, literature and inter-arts. For a list of funded projects, visit the CKCA website at www.basinculture.com or call 1-877-505-7355.
For 25 years, Columbia Basin Trust has been supporting the ideas and efforts of the people in the Columbia Basin. To learn more about the Trust’s programs and initiatives, visit ourtrust.org or call 1-800-505-8998.

  • Six Mile Beach
Residents of 6-mile near Nelson take action to promote public safety at beach
By Friends of Kootenay Lake – The 6 Mile beach close to Nelson is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. This beach is iconic, as the sand bar allows you to feel like you’re in the middle of the West Arm of Kootenay Lake.
What many do not know is that the tip of this sandbar has been known to give way to a strong undercurrent that has claimed far too many lives over the years. Throughout the years, there have been around 7 or more drownings at 6 Mile beach, and without the proper signage and education, people are still at risk.
The risk arises where a strong water current and sand create an unstable cornice that when it gives way can result in a drop of between 35 to 65 ft resulting in swimmers being dragged down into an undertow. A group of local residents has decided to get together after the most recent drowning incident this summer and address the lack of awareness of this danger.
Friends of Kootenay Lake attended a meeting with this group on August 26th, where they discussed the concern about the lack of management and signage at the beach. The residents are requesting the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) to assist them in implementing immediate signage and look at creating a Park Management Plan for this increasingly popular site.

Our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those lost

  • Nelson Italian-Canadian Society

Buon Appetito! The Nelson Italian-Canadian Society is Serving Up their 1st
    Annual Italian Sausage Fundraiser

Since 1972, Nelsonites have shown they have an appetite for good Italian food and enjoyed
yearly Italian style banquets while helping the Nelson Italian-Canadian Society to fundraise in support of many community initiatives.
But this year, COVID-19 has upended everyone’s lives, including the fundraising efforts of the community group. So far the group has had to cancel its Wine Festival, Bocce Tournament, Members’ Picnic and their annual BBQ’d Italian sausage sale, complete with grilled onions and red and green peppers, at the Nelson Road Kings Car Show.
So, with that in mind, the NICS has organized its volunteers to sell their famous Car Show
sausages for people to prepare and enjoy at home. They are now taking orders for mild or hot Italian sausages. Fresh, not frozen – 5 sausages per package for only $12. All proceeds go to support charitable initiatives in Nelson.
The NICS homemade Italian sausages are made from an authentic recipe that uses just four
ingredients. No filler, no preservatives, no gluten, no dairy. Just really good food.
“The Society volunteers are thrilled at the opportunity to be able to fundraise in spite of the
COVID cancellations of our events. We not only get to continue to give to the community but we get to feed them too. Now that’s Italian.” says NICS President Paul Boscariol. “Thanks in
advance to everyone who spends a few dollars and supports our 1st annual Italian Sausage
    Fundraiser.”
Use the link below to access the NICS secure online store where you can place your order.
Pre-orders for sausages are limited and the sale closes on July 22, 2020.

For people who may not have access to a computer, but would still like to place a cash or
cheque order, order forms are available at DeVito Shoes, 411 Hall St. in Nelson.
The pick-up date is August 9th from 12:00 – 5:00 pm at the Nelson District Rod & Gun Club.
If you have any questions, you can call Paul Boscariol at 250-505-6482 or email
