Community Message from Mayor Dooley: COVID-19
    COVID-19 PANDEMIC
    To the community of Nelson:
As you are aware, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global pandemic in relation to COVID-19. While the risk to our community remains low, it is important for our community to know that the City of Nelson is being proactive and taking precautionary measures to the extent possible to reduce the potential spreading of the virus.
First and foremost, our role as your local government is to support our community by helping to protect our staff through a safe and healthy workplace, to ensure that essential and valuable services such as electricity, water, sewer, emergency services, etc. continue to be available with as little disruption as possible. The City has developed business continuity plans for all of our departments and is providing the necessary education and tools to help our staff stay healthy.
As we head into spring break, BC health officials are discouraging all non-essential travel outside of Canada and have banned events larger than 250 people. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced that anyone who travels outside of Canada should stay home from work or school for 14 days upon their return to the province, as part of their civic duty. We do understand many in our community will be travelling and ask that you review the advice and advisories from the Government of Canada at https://travel.gc.ca/travelling/advisories.
The heart and soul of our community are our local businesses, and we all need to continue with business as usual at this time. We understand extra precautions may need to be taken in some cases, but if we are careful and take the time to thoroughly wash our hands, use hand sanitizer and keep a social distance of 3-6 ft (1-2meters), we will maintain the ability to visit retail and restaurants as normal. We also encourage businesses to share with the community on social media platforms and other means, what they are doing to protect their staff and customers as we move through this pandemic. Staff at the City of Nelson will continue to work closely with Emergency Management BC and Interior Health to provide updates as new information becomes available.
The City of Nelson relies on Interior Health, BC Public Health, and the Federal Government for information related to the virus itself. If you believe you are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, please contact your physician, the Healthlink line at 811, to be assessed or call the testing clinic hotline at (250) 551-7500 to be triaged for testing. Symptoms of COVID-19 include coughing, sneezing, fever, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. These symptoms may not present themselves for up to 14 days, but you may be a carrier of the virus; therefore, it is important to follow the guidelines set out by the health experts.
We thank you for doing your part to help maintain a safe and healthy community and for understanding the importance of this evolving situation.

  • Children and snow plows

A snow plow operator has POSTED THIS AND ASKED US TO SHARE HIS MESSAGE…Just got back from plowing snow and would ask all parents to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, TELL YOUR CHILDREN A SNOWPLOW IS BIG AND VERY VERY VERY DANGEROUS. I was About 35 feet from burying six children all 8 yrs and under today. I was very shaken and mad because parents don’t tell their kids to stay away from the road when they see or hear a plow coming…tell them it is not fun to get in the flying snow…it is heavy and could have ice. frozen ground. or 7 to 8 tons of snow coming off the wing…If it wasn’t for one child with a bright orange hat today i would be in an institution tonight. If there is snow on the road my job is to plow it….not to babysit your kids. Please educate your kids on the dangers of snow clearing equipment

  • Nelson Safe Boating Event 2019 –> Canadian Award Winner!

Sail Nelson is the recipient of Canada’s Best Boating Safety Initiative Award for 2019!
What is the Best Boating Safety Initiative Award?
The Best Boating Safety Initiative award is a Canadian Safe Boating Council award. This award is presented to an organization that creates an event or a new initiative promoting safe boating practicesin Canada.
There were several other nominees for 2019 and the competition was tough! However, Sail Nelson pulled through for the win and we are bringing this prestigious award to our little community!
    Why were we nominated?
Sail Nelson was nominated by BC Sailing for our Nelson Safe Boating Event, which we held in Nelson at Lakeside Park on May 25, 2019.
What is the Nelson Safe Boating Event?
The third week of May is the National Safe Boating Week for Canada and the US. This is when most of us boaters launch our boating season and get out on the water. It kicks off with the May long weekend.
I decided that Sail Nelson should bring together some of our safety partners to help the community learn more about safe boating practices. And so, the first annual Nelson Safe Boating Event was born!
Who are our partners and supporters?
When I sent out the call for participation, we had a great number of organizations and partners that wanted to join Sail Nelson with this initiative! These partners made the event a great success and brought so much valuable information to the public. They include:
    ● Nelson Search & Rescue
    ● Osprey Foundation
    ● BC Sailing (who nominated us for this award!)
    ● Nelson Fire Rescue Services
    ● Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society
    ● OneFire Safety
    ● BC Conservation Officer Service
    ● Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons
    ● Kootenay Emergency Response Physicians Association (KERPA)
    ● AdventureSmart
    ● Nelson Paddling Club
    ● Nelson Police Foundation
    ● Jones Boys Boats
    ● Christina Lake Marina
    ● Nelson Rowing Club
    ● Canadian Hydrographic Service
    ● Canadian Safe Boating Council
    ● and many more!
Sail Nelson could not have made this event possible without all of your participation and enthusiasm so THANK YOU! We also could not have made this event possible without the help, determination andsupport of our key volunteers including Graham Toews, Kim Green, Ginger Lester, Leanna Andrews and
    Will Halleran.
There were many other people behind the scenes as well, so thank you to you all!
Who else has won this award?
Sail Nelson has joined the ranks of some very high-level safety organizations who have won this award in
    the past.
Past winners include: Canadian Red Cross, ICOM Canada, Canadian Power Squadron, Kid’s Don’t Float, and the Lifesaving Society of Alberta. I am humbled and grateful that Sail Nelson is joining this list of professional boating safety organizations
    What’s next?
This is just the beginning for Sail Nelson. Join us on May 23, 2020 at Lakeside Park for the next annual
    Nelson Safe Boating Event!
Further information can be found at the event Facebook page, Sail Nelson’s website, or by contacting

  • CKCA Arts & Culture Funding 2020 MEDIA

ARTS AND CULTURE GRANTS NOW AVAILABLE

CKCA and the Trust announce 2020-21 programs
Columbia Basin – Artists in all disciplines—as well as arts and culture organizations—are invited to apply
for funding through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), which delivers the Arts and Culture
Program on behalf of Columbia Basin Trust.
The Trust has a longstanding partnership with CKCA for the delivery of arts and culture programming, as
well as sharing the perspectives of the arts and culture community in the region.
“In partnering with the Columbia Basin Trust, we’ve seen firsthand the positive impact funding has in
supporting arts and culture.” said Laura White, CKCA Chair. “In particular, we have seen the evolution of
many emerging artists in this region who have thrived. The Trust’s continued investment in arts and culture
through the CKCA has had, and will continue to have, a significant impact for artists and organizations in the
    Basin.”
For 2020-21, CKCA is receiving $750,000 from the Trust to directly support arts and culture projects.
Funding is available for individuals and groups through the following programs: funding through community
arts councils; minor capital arts projects; touring; arts and cultural mentoring / master classes; major project
arts; artists in education; and an arts presenting and creation program for organizations. Applications are
adjudicated once a year by local arts councils and the CKCA Steering Committee. Funding also supports the
development of a regional arts and cultural publication and the popular Columbia Basin Culture Tour, which
    will occur in August 2020.
“We are pleased to continue supporting artists and strengthening the arts and culture sector in partnership
with CKCA,” said Michelle d’Entremont, Manager, Delivery of Benefits. “Together we are supporting and
growing arts and culture in local communities and contributing to the unique culture of Basin life that so many
    of us enjoy.”
Visit www.basinculture.com, for more information about programs and application procedures.
